Compulsion Inquiry

Compulsion Inquiry

Lucid Steps to Freedom from Compulsions

The third inquiry, which is often related to the previous one, is called the Compulsion Inquiry. Here we look directly into those automatic behaviors over which we seem powerless and which create suffering, such as drinking, overeating, sexual addictions, smoking, internet surfing, television-watching, nail-biting, etc.

We often find that compulsions are connected to anxiety, so that in these sessions we sometimes “weave” the two inquiries, looking for subtle triggers of compulsive behaviors. Sometimes these are “ghost images”, words or sensations which appear as threatening, thereby driving the compulsive behavior which seeks, innocently, to avoid those difficult feelings.
